A new e-signature tool could save the Census Bureau up to $1.2 million a year by reducing the need for paper transactions and shipping.

VASCO Data Security International, an identity software company based in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., announced on March 14 that Census has selected its eSignLive tool for its new automated performance management system. eSignLive will enable Census employees to sign performance reviews electronically on any device. According to a press release issued by VASCO, eSignLive will save Census more than $1 million annually and will reduce turnaround time by 70 percent.

The Office of Personnel Management mandates a performance management system with three review points that are checked throughout the year. Each review point requires multiple signatures; a full review cycle for one of Census’ remote employees can take 90 days to complete. The electronic signature tool offers a way for the agency to expedite its performance management process while maintaining a sense of security, the press release states.

According to the press release, eSignLive is the only e-signature tool hosted on a FedRAMP Software-as-a-Service-level compliant cloud. The system is also compliant with personal identification verification cards.

eSignLive will be extended to other departments within Census after it is installed in the Census Regional Offices. In the fall, the software will be deployed to 8,000 field workers and 7,000 employees stationed in the agency’s headquarters.

“There is no single technology driving the digital transformation initiative–it’s about the convergence of multiple technologies and scalable solutions,” said Tommy Petrogiannis, president of eSignLive.
